The saga is underway associated with the possible acquisition of a tanker, Mariner, formerly known as Bella 1. The tanker has for many years been part of a shadow fleet that participates in the transportation of Venezuelan, Russian and Iranian oil. At the beginning of December, US forces attempted to take over the ship, but at the last minute the operation was abandoned, as the unit that had been flying the flag of Guyana had changed the flag to Russian.
