Elbląg port ready to receive ships in a year and a half

The Ministry of Infrastructure and local government agreed on a plan to deepen the waterway on the Elbląg River, beginning the way to the port of Elbląg for the first sea vessels in the next 18 months.

Minister Dariusz Klimczak announced during the press conference that the agreement would enable the long-awaited final phase of the project, which would connect the Gulf of Gdańsk and Elbląg through the recently built channel via Mierze Wiślana.

Thus, according to the ministry, Elbląg will become a seaport of real occurrence, serving ships up to 100 metres long and submerged up to 4.5 metres. This strategical decision aims not only to increase port functionality but besides to supply an impetus for the economical improvement of the full region.

Government investments, which so far have consumed almost PLN 2 billion, have focused on the excavation of the Wiślana Mierze. However, without deepening the last section of the water track, the full task remained unused. Currently, at the initiative of the Ministry of Infrastructure, work on the task is entering a decisive phase.

Deputy Minister of Infrastructure Arkadiusz Marchewka stressed that the depth work on the Elbląg River was already underway, covering a 10 km stretch. The last section of the waterway remains to be completed, on which the Maritime Office in Gdynia is already conducting appropriate research. Changes in the multiannual programme are besides finalised, which will let to safe about PLN 30-35 million for the project.
