Portugal announced last December a programme to get successors to its M48A2E1/A3 rocket anti-aircraft kits (MIM-72) withdrawn for respective years. Under the guaranteed contract, the acquisition of 3 launchers and radar included in a strategy capable of combating targets at a very short/short distance was planned. The option law provides for the acquisition of an additional launcher and radar. According to the assumptions of the procedure, the structure offered had to let for the elimination of targets over a minimum distance of 5 km, a ceiling of 4 km and the anticipation of cooperation with shoulder anti-aircraft rocket launchers (now Portugal has only about 40 FIM-92 Stinger). The value of the full tender was set at EUR 40 million.
