Police officers detained 3 persons suspected of stealing metallic elements from 171 gravestones at the cemetery in Niesteprów (Pomorskie Province). A female and 2 men aged 22, 25 and 51 were presented with allegations of desecration of resting and theft sites. They are facing up to 8 years in prison.
– According to the findings of the perpetrator, after cutting the grid, they entered the cemetery area, where they stole gravestones from metallic ornaments, letters, as well as crosses, thus desecrating the resting place of the dead – the press officer of the Kartuska police, St. Sgt. Aldona Naczk.
The robbery occurred last night from 12 to 13 March. Suspects were detained a week later in Gdańsk. They heard allegations of theft and desecration of the resting place.
The police officer said there may be further detentions. It is besides checked whether the detainees committed theft in another cemeteries in the Pomeranian Voivodeship.
