Ministry of Digital Affairs announces the presentation of the fresh taxation concept in the next 2 weeks. The bill is to be ready this year. It is simply a signal that Poland, contrary to the restrained actions of the European Union, intends to regulate itself the issue of taxation of global technological giants.
The government is intensifying work on introducing a digital taxation in Poland. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digitization Krzysztof Gawkowski announced that the foundations of the fresh tribute, which is the consequence of months of analysis, will shortly be presented to the public. The aim is to oblige the largest technology companies to pay taxes adequately to the revenues generated on the Polish market, which is to reduce the transfer of profits to a little fiscal jurisdiction.
The initiative of the Polish government fits into a wider global trend, but at the same time precedes it. At global level, work has been under the auspices of the OECD on a comprehensive solution, the alleged First Pillar, to guarantee a fairer distribution of global corporate profits. However, this process is slow and faces many political obstacles. As a result, any countries, specified as France, Italy and Spain, decided to introduce their own unilateral solutions, which in the past led to trade tensions, especially from the US.
Representatives of the Polish government seem to be prepared for possible controversy. Minister Gawkowski He signaled that Poland did not intend to wait for EU regulations that were stuck in a dead spot, partially for fear of Washington's reaction. Instead, Warsaw wants to conduct assertive, partnership dialog with all American administration. At the same time, the government emphasizes the scale of Polish investments in American technology and military equipment as an argument in possible negotiations.
Although the key details, specified as the exact taxation rate, its base and the collection mechanism, stay unknown, the direction has been clearly defined. For the large Tech sector, this announcement means preparing for a fresh regulatory challenge. For the state budget, this could in turn be a new, crucial origin of income, crucial in the context of expanding expenditure on digital transformation and defence. The next fewer weeks will show whether the Ministry's ambitious timetable will be maintained and what the Polish model of taxation of the digital economy will look like.
