Poland between Washington and Brussels: expectations, concerns and questions about the right state

Iwona Wyszogrodka and Witold Sokała analysed the expectations of Poland in the transatlantic system. On the 1 hand, the U.S. Ambassador outlines Warsaw as a “leader of Europe” and “a associate of the family”, on the another hand – in the background is the hard doctrine of the Trump administration, which may mean the dispersal of interests between Europe and the United States.

Behind the ‘chocolate factory’ of compliments is the ‘kiy and carrot’ method. Poland – if it does not meet the requirements of Washington – can face pressure. This arrangement is like interference in interior affairs of the state and even in the electoral process.

Between compliments and requirements

Ambassador Thomas Rose in an interview with Piotr Kraśka assured that Poland is treated by the US as a “family” and “model to follow”. However, under the layer of diplomatic courtesy there are expectations: Warsaw is to lead Europe, push a hard line towards NATO and become the voice of American interests on the continent.

Europe vs America

The speakers stressed that increasing tensions could lead to a breakdown of the unity of the European Union. Poland, covered with promises and "presents" from the US, can be bribed to distance itself from Brussels. In the background, there is simply a question about the future of the countries of the region – Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia or Romania – which may besides be active in the power world.

Despite the pessimistic tone, there was besides a note of optimism. If Europe can unite, it can become a more powerful player than Russia or even China. Poland as the “celnik of Europe” – due to its location – has the chance to play a key hub, provided that it cannot be played against its own partners.
