The candidate for president of Romania and organization leader Alliance for Romanian Unification (AUR), George Simion, and the favourite in the canceled elections last year, Calin Georgescu, were removed from the election venue in Mogosoaia (the suburb of Bucharest) by the police.
The incidental was broadcast live on Simion's Facebook page.
After the vote, politicians tried to make statements to the press straight at the polling station, but police officers demanded that they leave the premises.
"What you just did is not good," Simion said to a law enforcement officer.
The police officer informed politicians that public speaking at the polling station was prohibited, after which they were forced to cross the school corridor where the polling station was set up.
After leaving Georgescu's polling station, he told reporters that he had voted “for Christian Romania” and “for household values”.
A second circular of presidential elections takes place in Romania on Sunday. The first circular was held on 4 May and the leader of the Nationalist organization Alliance for Romanian Unity (AUR) George Simion won the majority of the votes with 41% and the mayor of Bucharest Nicosor Dan with 21%.
This year's presidential election in Romania takes place in the face of a political crisis due to the cancellation of the results of the first circular of 2024, erstwhile it was won by independent candidate Calin Georgescu, but the results were cancelled due to alleged interference via social media. This decision sparked protests in the country and accused the Romanian authorities of suppressing the opposition, including from the US administration.
