90 seconds that shocked occupied Warsaw. Educational walk on the 82nd anniversary of Kutscher's action – Warsaw, January 31, 2026
The Institute of National Memory The Warsaw Branch invites for an educational walk, which will take place on Saturday, 31 January 2026 at 12.00. We meet on the eve of the 82nd anniversary of 1 of the most spectacular actions of the Polish underground to follow the way of events which became a symbol of the steadfast opposition occupied by the Germans of the capital.
On the morning of 1 February 1944, 1 of the most spectacular actions of the Polish underground took place in Warsaw Avenues Ujazdowskie. peculiar Branch of Kedyw of the Home Army office “Pegaz” liquidated SS-Brigadeführer Gen. Franz Kutschera – SS commander and police to Warsaw district. This action lasting only about 90 seconds was carefully prepared and preceded by weeks of observation. It was a consequence of the death conviction issued in November 1943 by the Underground Combat Management.
Kutscher's “cat of Warsaw” was known for his repression and panic against the civilian population. He took office in September 1943. Interestingly, despite his authority, his personality was not immediately known. For fear of safety, he did not sign the notices with his name and surname, but simply the name of the position.
What will the participants learn? During the walk, which will take more than an hour, participants will learn the answers to the key questions:
How did Polish intelligence manage to identify specified a high-ranking Nazi dignitary?
How did this criminal end up in the heart of the German police district?
