Polish hero of the WTC. A Unique History
Extraordinary stories are almost impossible in the world. Much has already been written about the heroic acts of our countrymen who are abroad. We remember a heroic pole in Britain or Germany in the fight against terrorists. But does anyone know that during the terrorist attack on the WTC towers there were many heroes saving people at the time, among them were Poles. In the attacks of 11 September 2001, 6 Poles were killed, they worked at the level of plane impact and higher floors, they had no chance of avoiding the worst. They died at work that made them happy.

Here's 1 of those stories:
"During the terrorist attack on the planet Trade Center, there were many Poles and people of Polish origin in the vicinity of 2 towers. 1 of them was an emigrant from Poland working at the WTC, who was later called a hero in the media. On 11 September at 8.45 p.m., American Boeing 767 hit the northern tower of the planet Trade Center, working there Jan Demczur, an emigrant from Poland (22 years in the US), was on the express lift. Along with 5 another people, they were stuck at an altitude of about 50 stories.
The Pole was the only 1 who did not lose his head, and with the aid of a washer with a handle, he began to penetrate the wall. A fewer twelve minutes of hard work was effective. The exit was free and all the people locked in the elevator-trap ran towards the spare stairs.

– abruptly we started to fall down – Demczur said, who was busy cleaning windows in the tower. Fortunately, the safety brakes did not neglect and the elevator stopped. First I thought it was just a method problem. It wasn't until the smoke came out that I knew it was serious. We opened the door, but behind them was a plaster-carton wall. I had a brush with a washcloth with me, and for 45 minutes I hit the wall with a handle, until we yet hollowed the gap through which we got out – the Pole reports. A fewer minutes after Demczur and the another elevator passengers got out of the building, a powerful tower collapsed to the ground. Jan Demczur became 1 of America's idols overnight. ABC, CNN and NBC stations invited him to their programs. – He's a real hero, like Pulaski or Kościuszko – Paula Zahn, CNN star, spoke of him. I'm a comic hero! I would do nothing without the aid of fellow workers, dishwashers and divine providence," Demczur says. The Americans don't think so. His brush went to the National Museum of American History.”

Poles died in the assassination:
Maria Jakubiak, Dorota Kopiczko, Jan Maciejewski, Łukasz Milewski, Anna Pietkiewicz, Norbert Szurkowski (son of Ryszard Szurkowski). On the first anniversary of the bombing, a disc devoted to their memory was unveiled in the Skarszewski Park in Warsaw.
