The borders of Poland under the eye of the EC. This is how Brussels reacted to the decision of the government

On Tuesday Prime Minister Donald Tusk informed about the decision to reconstruct temporary border controls at the borders of Poland with Germany and Lithuania. The fresh rules are due to enter into force by Monday, July 7th. According to RMF FM reports, the Polish government has not informed the European Commission of its plans


– At this stage, we did not receive a formal notification, but we saw the information. Thanks to informal contacts with the Polish authorities, we know that we can receive specified a notification shortly – he told the Commission’s correspondent at the station in Brussels

Under Union legislation, temporary border controls are possible but require circumstantial conditions, including close coordination at European Union level and consultation with all associate States concerned.

The Ombudsman stressed that border controls should as small as possible interfere with the free movement of persons and goods.

– We are in close contact with the Polish authorities and authorities of all the associate States concerned," he said. He added that the EC "is ready to facilitate cooperation and coordination if necessary".

Border checks with Germany and Lithuania return


Donald Tusk started a government gathering on 1 July with crucial information. After consultation with the Border Guard, the Polish Army and the police, it was decided to temporarily reconstruct control at the Polish border with Germany and Poland with Lithuania.

– This morning our briefing took place with the Border Guard, Polish Army and Police. The subject was the situation at the border with Germany – and the examination of the request for temporary reintroduction of border control. We decided that we are restoring temporary control on the Polish border with Germany and Poland with Lithuania – he said.

For organisational reasons, the decision will enter into force on Monday 7 July. – Until then, appropriate services, including primarily Border Guards, were obliged to logistically prepare this operation," he said.

As we wrote on Temat.pl, in the last days along the border with Germany, alleged civic patrols began operating. The groups created by private individuals declare that their aim is to prevent illegal migration from Germany to Poland.

Participants in these groups keep that they conduct "monitoring and preventive" activities. They focus on observing border routes, forests and paths that they believe migrants can decision to cross the border beyond authoritative crossings.
