A fresh coalition agreement was signed in Lithuania, which brings political shuffling and one more time opens the door to the government for a organization representing the Polish minority. On August 25, 2025 leaders of the Lithuanian Social Democratic organization (LSDP), the Niemna Dawn Group, the Association of Farmers and Greens (LVŽS) and the Polish Election Action in Lithuania – the Union of Christian Families (AWPL-ZCHR) signed a fresh governing coalition. The AWPL-ZCHR consists of 3 Members of Polish nationality, which gives this community a real influence on power.

As agreed, the Social Democrats will include 9 ministries, the Niemna Dawn will receive 3 ministries, and the LVŽS and the AWPL-ZCHR will share 2 more. It is initially assumed that the AWPL-ZCHR will cover the Ministry of Justice – this would be a crucial step in terms of participation of Poles in the Lithuanian central administration.

The Polish number in the Sejm is represented by Rita Tamašunienė, Jarosław Narkiewicz and Czesław Olszewski – all with many years of parliamentary and government experience. president AWPL-ZCHR and Euro MP Waldemar Tomaszewski stressed that his group focuses on social justice, household protection, an honest state and a clear separation of policies from business interests.

The fresh coalition was formed after the collapse of the erstwhile cabinet, led by Gintautas Paluckas. This government, created by the Social Democrats, the Niemno Dawn and the Democratic Union "In the Name of Lithuania", lost the majority in the Sejm. A key point in the dispute was the unwillingness of the Democratic Union to proceed working with the Niemny Dawn Group. Their place in the coalition was taken by Farmers and Greens and AWPL-ZChR, who together have 11 mandates.

The fresh parliamentary majority has 82 votes in the 141-member Sejm. This gives her an advantage adequate for unchangeable governments, although ideological differences between coalitions will require carefully balanced compromises. The negotiations were concluded on Sunday and the agreement was signed on Monday. It was established that the LVŽS and AWPL-ZCHR parties would not be obliged to support government on world-view issues, specified as the legalization of single-sex unions, sexual education or changes in reproductive wellness law. specified proposals are to be treated as matters of conscience alternatively than organization discipline.

The fresh government is to be headed by Inga Ruginienė, the erstwhile Labour Minister and Social politician representative. The Ruginienė candidacy was made after Gintautas Paluckas resigned on corruption charges. president Gitanas Nausėda has 15 days to present the authoritative candidate for Prime Minister, and the vote in the Sejm is scheduled to take place on Tuesday. In the Kuluaras there was besides talk about Robert Duchniewicz, Deputy Chief of the LSDP and the politician of Polish origin, as a possible candidate for Prime Minister. In the end, however, he resigned from this position, supporting Ruginienė as a individual who would better warrant the stableness of the coalition. Ruginienė was unanimously accepted by its organization and is besides supported by fresh coalitions.

Lithuania is facing a fresh political constellation today. The presence of the Polish organization in the government – and not only symbolic, but having a translation into the cast of the key ministry – may be a breakthrough in relations between national minorities and the Lithuanian majority. At the same time, AWPL-ZCHR ensured that its perfect identity was respected, and controversial issues of the worldview did not become a part of forced loyalty to the coalition.

The fresh government programme includes a number of priorities. These included: increased spending on defence, support for the home business, improving the quality of life of families, expanding the availability of out-of-school education, kid allowances and free meals for simple school students. The coalition announces investments in roads and green energy and actions for equal access to quality education. At the same time, the government plans to temporarily suspend excise duties on fuel while expanding taxation of tobacco products, alcohol and e-cigarettes. The programme besides points out the improvement of strategies to combat xenophobia, anti-Semitism and all forms of discrimination.

The fresh coalition is simply a political arrangement full of tension and balance. On the 1 hand, clearly outlined conventional values of AWPL-ZChR and LVŽS, on the another hand, pro-social and progressive demands of LSDP and Niemno Świtu. Participation of the Polish party, in addition to its symbolic meaning, can besides be a test of how effectively national minorities can co-create state institutions without losing their identity.

The fresh Lithuanian government, established on August 25, 2025, is simply a coalition built on a delicate compromise. It consists of Social Democrats, Niemno Dawn, Farmers and Greens and AWPL-ZCHR. Poles who have been marginalised in central politics for years, this time have a chance to have a real impact – including the inclusion of the ministry of justice. At the head of the government it is likely to be Inga Ruginienė. The coalition is based on a majority of 82 mandates, which gives a unchangeable basis for action. This is simply a deal that can be a fresh model for Lithuanian democracy – more inclusive but more demanding in terms of managing diversity.
