Why shouldn't Shein be ordered? European Commission detected unfair practices on the platform
According to reports from Euronews, the European Commission has carried out an investigation which revealed Shein's usage of practices contrary to EU legislation. The platform presents customers with false product reductions. It is presented either a false first price, or a clock counting down to the end of the promotion, which never truly ends, and its intent is only to get the recipient to act quickly. Moreover, serious transparency gaps have been identified. This includes inaccurate returns, misleading sustainability statements and misleading product labels. The situation is aggravated by the fact that the platform frequently makes contact with client service hard for users, which importantly limits their ability to submit questions or complaints. Shein now has a period to respond to the charges and to present a plan to destruct these problems. If the European Commission finds that there has been no improvement, the company may be fined.
Euronews recalls that she heard akin allegations last November about Temu's platform. Shortly before the European Commission was informed, Euronews besides informed that Commissioner for Trade Maroš Šefčovič wanted to introduce additional charges for shipments containing products from China sent to Europe. The handling fee would amount to 2 euros (about PLN 8,5) and would be charged to any tiny package worth up to EUR 150 (about PLN 636.5). This is primarily intended to aid cover the costs of screening products originating in China. By the way, this may reduce the number of specified shipments. Today, around 12 million tiny packages a day are being delivered to Europe, which gives an estimated 4.6 billion items a year. Most of these are goods sold by Chinese online platforms specified as Shein and Temu.
