The share of electrical cars in Poland is importantly lower than in the European Union – the Polish economical Institute (PIE) reported in the report. On average, it was around 4% in the EU in 2024 and 0.3% in our country.
citing the study of the European Association des Constructeurs Européens d’Automobiles (ACEA), pastry experts reported that passenger cars with external charging capacity, i.e. electrical vehicles and plug-in hybrids, accounted for 3.7% of the full cars in the European Union in 2024.
According to the global Energy Agency (IAE), which cited PIE, the combined share of electrical vehicles (BEV and PHEV) in all registered vehicles in the EU amounted to 4.4% in 2024.
At that time, the share of BEV cars exceeding 5% of all registered cars was recorded in 4 associate States: Belgium (5.1%), Luxembourg (7.1%), Sweden (7.2%) and Denmark (12.1%). Higher shares of specified vehicles were recorded in non-EU countries, Iceland (12.1%) and Norway (22.7%).
The Institute emphasized that in Poland in 2024 the share of electrical cars among all registered vehicles was lower than the EU average.
"According to ACEA data, in 2024 the share of battery powered electrical cars among all registered vehicles was 0.3%, while hybrid plug-in 0.4%... The latest figures of the Electromobility counter of the Polish Association of fresh Mobility and the Polish Association of Automotive manufacture show that in October 2025 a full of 212,7 1000 electrical vehicles were registered in Poland, of which 107,9 1000 were BEV vehicles and 104,8 1000 plug-in hybrids," the Institute stated.
He pointed out that in our country in 2024 there were inactive the most combustion cars, including a advanced share of LPG powered cars. According to ACEA data, in 2024 82.6 percent of passenger cars in Poland were powered by petrol or diesel, and another 12 percent by LPG. Poland was, alongside Bulgaria, the only EU country in which the share of LPG powered vehicles exceeded 5%.
One origin limiting the dissemination of electrical vehicles in Poland remains the pace of improvement of charging infrastructure. In 2024, the number of public charging points in Poland amounted to 9.2 1000 (of which 3 1000 were fast charging points) against 130 1000 fast charging points and 690 1000 free charging points across the EU. On average, there are more than 7 times as many electrical vehicle charging points in the EU as in our population.
"In the coming years, the pace of electrification of road transport in Poland will be mostly determined by the improvement of charging infrastructure, in accordance with the provisions of the Regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council on the improvement of alternate fuels infrastructure (AFIR), and the effectiveness of public policy instruments, including support programmes for electrical vehicle purchasers (e.g. NasjaEauto)", emphasised PIE.
Polish economical Institute is simply a public think tank economic; it prepares reports, analyses and recommendations on key areas of the economy and social life.
