Non-burning grass in spring – which is illegal, and their fires pose a large threat to people, as well as nature – was called upon present by authorities and services. According to the data presented, there were about 35,000 fires caused by grass burning last year.
Today, a press conference was held before the PSP Provincial Command in Białystok, inaugurating the educational and information run "Stop the Grass Fires".
Podlaskie voivodship Jacek Brzozowski, citing PSP data, said that there were about 35,000 fires last year, which were the consequence of grass burning, of which the most fires, nearly 20,000, were recorded in March and April.
– Therefore, given the alarming data and consequences, the bad consequences that carry with them related to the burning of grasses, we convince and urge that we simply be wise before, not after, and liable primarily for nature, but besides for the life and wellness of people; liable for animals, but besides for our property and our possessions, which is frequently besides devastated due to the fire," said the voivode. He besides stressed that burning grass is illegal.
He recalled the fires in Biebrza National Park in 2020 and 2025. In 2020, 5.5 1000 hectares were burned (it was the largest fire in the past of the park, about 4.5 1000 hectares in the park and almost a 1000 in its body). Last year, the fire broke out in Easter, lasted 11 days, then 185 hectares were burned. Brzozowski recalled that investigations in both events showed that the fires were the consequence of illegal grass burning. Both investigations were dropped due to the non-detection of the perpetrators.
