Platform X loses millions of users in the European Union

According to the latest study published by Platform X under the requirements of the Digital Services Act, the number of social media users in Europe has fallen by more than 10.5% in just half a year. This means the failure of more than 11 million active users per period – read Mashable.

Deductions in France, Poland and Germany

By data contained in the DSA study for the period from October 2024 to March 2025, X presently has 94.8 million active users per period in the EU, compared to about 105 million a year earlier. The largest decrease was recorded in France (down from 20.1 million to 17.4 million), Poland (–1.8 million), Germany (–1.5 million) and Spain (–1 million). In Luxembourg and Lithuania, the number of users decreased by 25%.

The decrease in the number of users is not just about Europe. According to erstwhile analyses Financial Times, X lost 1 5th of its regular users in the US and a 3rd in the UK. Although a temporary increase in traffic occurred after Donald Trump's triumph in the November 2024 presidential election, this trend did not last long.

Crisis of trust and criticism of Elon Musk's politics

Since Elon Musk's takeover of Twitter in 2022 (and renamed it X), the platform has met with a wave of criticism for changing content moderation policies, strengthening disinformation content and supporting utmost right-wing environments. In July 2023, the European Commission officially accused X of violating the DSA rules, although it had not yet imposed sanctions.

The site was given up by well-known entities and individuals: the city of Paris, author Stephen King, Leeds University, and the Guardian editorial board. There are besides increasing voices of users expressing concerns about the improvement of the platform.

Problems not only in social media

X is not the only 1 experiencing problems. Tesla – another company Muska – recorded a drop in sales of electrical cars in Europe by more than 50% in the first 2 months of 2025. Global protests and a 71% drop in company profits only deepened the business force on the Muska Empire.
