In fresh days, North Korea has again become the focus of the global community. Kim Jong Un, the leader of the state, announced that the atomic weapons improvement program would proceed “indefinitely”. This statement, as reported by the state's North Korean media, indicates that Pyongyang has no intention of giving up the improvement of its atomic potential.

Kim Jong Un late visited the atomic production base and atomic weapons institute. Although no date of inspection was given, nor the information where these facilities are located, the South Korean press agency Yonhap suggests that this could have been the place Kim Jong Un visited already last September. It was then that a visit to the uranium enrichment plant, which may indicate that Pyongyang would become increasingly advanced in its atomic programs.

According to KCNA reports, Kim Jong Un estimated the country's safety situation to be "still very serious" and "a long-term confrontation with the most fierce hostile countries – inevitable". This conviction indicates that Pyongyang sees a threat from another countries and is willing to defend himself. Kim Jong Un has outlined that the "invariably noble duty" is to continually strengthen the atomic shield to warrant the sovereignty and interests of the state, as well as the nation's right to development.

This message is only a fewer days after U.S. president Donald Trump expressed his intention to enter into a dialog with Pyongyang. This may indicate that Kim Jong Un is not prone to concessions. U.S. negotiations with North Korea on the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula were conducted during Trump's first term, that is, in 2017-21. Although they temporarily alleviated tensions between the 2 countries, they did not consequence in Pyongyang's resignation from the improvement of the atomic program.

Data on the improvement of atomic weapons in North Korea are alarming. According to the global Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Pyongyang has about 30-50 atomic warheads. This is, of course, estimates, but they indicate that North Korea has crucial atomic potential.

It is besides worth noting the issue of safety in the region. South Korea and Japan are the 2 countries that most fear the threat from Pyongyang. They are the closest neighbours of North Korea and may be the first to be attacked in the event of a war.

US president Joe Biden besides pointed out the threat from Pyongyang. In his speech to the U.S. Congress, he said that "we cannot let North Korea to build atomic weapons that will be a threat to our country and our allies." This conviction indicates that the United States is ready to act to halt the improvement of atomic weapons in North Korea.

In the close future, you can anticipate further escalation of tensions between Pyongyang and Washington. North Korea will likely proceed to make its atomic potential, which could lead to a conflict with the United States and their allies. This is simply a dangerous game where the safety of the full region is at stake.
