Germany will complete its mission with the Patriot strategy in Poland and the Bundeswehr soldiers will leave the country this Friday. The German defence minister, Boris Pistorius, officially confirmed this decision, stressing that the Patriot systems have effectively contributed to civilian protection and critical infrastructure for about 9 months.
Germany withdraws soldiers operating the Patriot strategy from Poland
On Wednesday, Minister Pistorius thanked for his cooperation with Poland, pointing out that defence systems were a key component in ensuring safety on the east NATO border. The withdrawal of German soldiers and defensive launchers is part of an adaptation plan adapted to the changing geopolitical situation.
Germany has decided to retreat its soldiers liable for operating the Patriot strategy from Poland. Minister of Defence of Germany, Boris Pistorius, expressed his satisfaction with the reception of German soldiers from the inhabitants of Zamość and their Polish colleagues. In his message he emphasized that for nearly 9 months the German Patriot systems effectively protected the critical border infrastructure of Poland.
Minister Pistorius besides thanked German soldiers for their commitment and hard work during their service in Poland. In his words, the emphasis can be found on solidarity and cooperation between Poland and Germany, especially in the context of the defence of the east flank of NATO. The decision to retreat soldiers and the Patriot strategy from Poland was previously planned, in accordance with the earlier announcements of the head of the German Defence Ministry 3 months ago.
The solemn appeal scheduled for 15 November will be a symbolic termination of the Bundeswehr mission on Polish territory. After this event, staff and 3 Patriot units will gradually decision back to Germany. This decision opens the area for reflection on possible changes in the region's defence strategy, and underlines the importance of cooperation and coordination between NATO countries in the context of maintaining safety on the east flanks of the alliance.
It is worth noting that this decision takes place in the context of a fresh rocket incidental in Poland. On November 15, 2022, the rocket fell on the Wire village, close to the Ukrainian border, causing the death of 2 people. In consequence to this event, Poland reinforced its air defence in the Ukraine border area, and besides requested the support of the NATO border defence, including Germany.
According to analysts, the withdrawal of the Patriot strategy could influence the improvement of fresh defence strategies in the region, while stressing the request for further cooperation and coordination between NATO countries on safety in the east flanks of the alliance.
