Day after pill in Poland: popularity and demographic consequences

pro-life.pl 1 month ago

Last year Polish pharmacies issued almost 53,000 prescriptions for the pill “day after”, and according to estimates the number of all prescriptions, including doctors, could scope 300 000. The popularity of the product increases, especially among women aged 19–40 and raises serious questions about the value of life, reproductive wellness and demographic future of Poland.

Data The eHealth Center shows a clear trend in expanding interest in emergency contraception. Women between the ages of 19 and 40 are liable for 69 percent of all prescriptions, which shows that the preparation is most commonly found in the patients during the highest reproductive activity.

A pilot program, introduced in May 2024, allows pharmacists to issue prescriptions without visiting a doctor – even 15-year-olds, without parental consent. What was meant to be easier, in practice it became mass access to the preparation, which in many cases ends the life of the already conceived man.

Health and ethical impacts

The tablet “day after”, containing levonorgestrel or ulipristal acetate, works differently depending on the day of the menstrual cycle in which it will be taken. It can hold or inhibit ovulation by acting as a contraceptive. However, if fertilisation has already occurred, the preparation prevents the embryo from nesting in the uterus. In practice, this means a break in life, which has just begun – early-morning action.

It may besides origin a number of side effects. Even tiny doses of synthetic hormones or substances inhibiting them can affect the functioning of the full body. The most common conditions are nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, dizziness, muscle and bone pain, painful menstruation, pelvic pain, fatigue and temper swings. Diarrhoea, bleeding disorders, vaginal inflammation, fever, visual disturbances, acne, and emotional disorders are little common.

Ewa Kowalewska, president of Human Life global Poland, points to dramatic consequences:

“If we presume that half of these prescriptions were aborted, we have 150 000 children. And how much are we short of for a consecutive reproduction? precisely the same.”

Her words are not excessive, as the fertility rate in Poland in 2024 was 1,099 children per woman, and the birth rate in the last months of 2025 fell to about −4.7 per 1,000 inhabitants. Each generation becomes smaller and smaller than the erstwhile generation. It's not a momentary crisis, it's the slow extinction of a nation.

Demographic implications

Poland belongs to the countries with the lowest fertility rate in Europe. To keep the natural population growth, each woman should have at least 2.1 children on average. Under these conditions, all conceived life that has no chance of developing truly affects the future of the country. all case of utilizing the “day after” pill during the most fertile period means less fresh generations of Poles.

Availability and consequences of utilizing the “day after” pill

The pilot drug prescription program allows you to get a pill in the pharmacy without seeing your doctor. Although the preparation is presented as contraception Emergency, in many cases ends a life that has already begun. all conceived life that never has a chance to make is simply a lost future for our nation.

Day after tablet is not a safe plan B. frequently means the end of life, which has just begun. all conceived kid has right live, even if you started in a difficult, unplanned situation.

If the trend of mass usage of the measurement is not stopped, in respective years Poland will face the deficiency of young generations, shortage of workers, taxpayers and guardians for seniors. By protecting life from conception, we care not only about children, but about the future of the full nation.
