CEO Remarks

According to Adani Airports Holding Limited (AAHL) CEO Arun Bansal addressed the media people gathered for this event.

He said that Navi Mumbai Airport is in discussion with Indian Airlines for both domestic and international flights.

Further, the airport will start its operation with a southern runway on 08/26 and will be able to handle 50 aircraft movements, which include takeoff and landing.

Furthermore, the Terminal 1 will be able to handle 20 million passengers annually.

Commenting on Terminal 2, Mr Bansal told us that, ‘Navi Mumbai Airport officials have started the designing of T2 and will start construction by mid of next year (2025).’ Mostly after the Airport commences its operations.

Further, Arun Sir said that Terminal 2 is set to be completed by the end of 2028 or by the first half of 2029.

With this, they can be able to handle close to Mumbai Airport capacity, which is around 50 million passengers. The airport will be built in four phases and in the first phase it will have a cargo and passenger terminal and a single runway.

By completion of all phases, the airport will handle close to 90 million passengers across fully integrated 4 terminals.

Launch in April 2025

Navi Mumbai Int’l Airport will be inaugurated on April 17, 2025, and will start its domestic and cargo operations on May 15, 2025. The International flights will begin in July 2025.

As per our source, IndiGo Airlines and Akasa Air (QP) may commence initial flights, and Air India (AI) and others to follow soon. However, airport officials said that they will soon reveal the schedule and after getting regulatory approvals, they can comment on business developments.

The Airport will apply for AIP in February 2025 to allow private and charter operations after 70 days of wait time. AIP stands for Airport Improvement Program, which offers grants to public agencies and, in some cases, private owners or entities for planning and developing public-use airports.

In the coming initial year of operation, the airport expects to handle 8-9 million domestic and 4-5 million international passengers, in total around 13-14 million. It will take some years to attain its maximum capacity, which is 20 million (Terminal 1).

Mumbai Airport (BOM) is already running close to maximum capacity and it will continue to operate its existing operations normally. The more capacity and new developments are likely to be handled by Navi Mumbai Airport. However, it will also serve the flights to many existing domestic destinations served by BOM. This will help residents residing in Navi Mumbai, Raigad, and Pune to nearby areas to take advantage of this new airport.

PAPI Lights Tests

The Airport Authority of India completed crucial Precision Approach Path Indicator validation tests at Navi Mumbai International Airport in December 2024. The PAPI system installation marks a significant advancement toward the airport’s scheduled March 31, 2025, operational launch, confirmed by Adani Airports-led NMIA officials.

The AAI’s Flight Inspection Unit conducted extensive day and night testing protocols on December 12, validating the PAPI system’s effectiveness. The system implements specialized red and white signal lights positioned perpendicular to the runway, providing pilots with essential visual guidance during landing approaches.

IndiGo Airlines achieved simulator validation for Draft Required Navigation Performance approaches at both Navi Mumbai and Noida airports in November 2024.

The airline has completed its initial test flight at Noida International Airport and Navi Mumbai International Airport.
