The president of the European Parliament, Robert Metsol, informed of the initiation of the procedure for waiving the immunity of 3 Polish MEPs. They concern Grzegorz Braun, Daniel Obietek and Patrick Jako.
The procedure for the erstwhile president of Orlen was launched at the request of erstwhile lawyer General Adam Bodnar from the end of July. The Warsaw territory Attorney's Office has previously made appropriate announcement in this case.
Charges against Obiekt
Both are to answer for 2 cases - suspicion of false evidence before the court and withdrawal of the "No" weekly number from Orlen Station. The first case is about evidence concerning a relation with writer Piotr Nisztor made on 11 May 2023.
The announcement was made by writer Grzegorz Jakubowski, citing recordings from 2018 published by Onet in March 2024. The recordings are expected to show that Obiek had informal contacts with Nisztor, contrary to what he testified in court.
Response from erstwhile chief of Orlen
The second case concerns the withdrawal in March 2023 of 1 "No" weekly issue from all sales outlets of Orlen. "I consider it most appropriate to retreat 1 issue of the weekly "No" due to the fact that it offended spiritual feelings, the cross and St John Paul II" - wrote Obatek on platform X in July.
"If I am to lose my immunity, I take it with pride" - added erstwhile president of Orlen. He besides stressed that the recordings were assembled and explained everything in the prosecutor's office.
The Braun and What Case
In the case of Grzegorz Braun, the fresh lawyer General Waldemar Żurek submitted the application. It concerns statements from July 10 and 14 in which the Euro MP questioned the genocide in gas chambers in the German Nazi Auschwitz camp.
Patrick Jaka is to answer for justice Igor Tulei's suit to defend individual property. The justice demands an apology for the public claim that he deliberately gave consent to Pegasus' surveillance.
Procedure in the European Parliament
Each proposal goes to the EP legal committee, which prepares a study on this matter. The Commission does not have certain deadlines, but the preparation of a paper usually takes respective months.
The proposal is then voted on at the plenary session. The European Parliament shall decide to revoke the immunity by simple majority.
