Paris without electrical scooters

On April 2, 2023, the people of Paris took part in a referendum on the future of electrical scooters for rental. Nearly 90 percent of the voters voted for their liquidation.

However, turnout was very low. Only about 7 percent of the eligible people went to the urns. Nevertheless, the city authorities found the consequence conclusive and decided to end the business of scooter rental operators on the streets of the capital of France.

This means of transport has been opposed for respective years. The most commonly pointed to abandoned vehicles blocking passages, obstacles for pedestrians, especially the aged and with disabilities, as well as the expanding number of accidents. They besides criticized the fast driving kind of users and frequent violations of traffic regulations.

After a referendum from the streets of the city, about 15,000 scooters belonging to private operators disappeared. The ban applies only to commercial rental. Private electrical scooters can inactive be used. The gap in shared transport was rapidly filled by urban bicycles.

Paris is 1 of the largest communication hubs in Europe. The city itself has an area of about 105 km2 and has about 2.1 million inhabitants, while the full Parisian agglomeration exceeds 12 million people. The basis of public transport is simply a metro numbering 16 lines and over 220 km of tracks. They are complemented by a network of RER agglomeration railways, buses and a tram network developed in fresh years.

Trams have a long past in the capital of France. In the first half of the 20th century, they were a common means of transport, but in the 1930s and 1940s they were almost completely liquidated erstwhile the authorities were betting on the improvement of metro and motor traffic. The thought of trams was returned only after respective decades. The first fresh line was launched in 1992, and present the network covers respective routes of a full dimension of more than 100 km, serving mainly the outskirts of the city and suburbs.

In fresh years, the Paris authorities have consistently restricted the traffic in the centre, developing public transport and cycling infrastructure, which has become 1 of the pillars of urban transport policy.
