The European Parliament adopted a resolution which, according to the Polish Episcopal Conference, attempts to circumvent the competences of the associate States and impose an ideological imagination of the right to abortion. The squad of Bioethical experts of the KEP leaves no doubt: the paper is illegal and its language is falsifying the reality of life protection.
This is about the resolution "My Voice, My Choice: For Safe and Accessible Abortion" adopted by the European Parliament on 17 December 2025. MEPs called on the European Commission to make a voluntary financial mechanics from the EU budget to enable associate States to guarantee access to abortion for those for whom it is limited or impossible.
According to the authors of the resolution, access to "safe" and legal abortion is to be part of sexual and reproductive rights, recognised as fundamental rights. The paper besides calls for the right to abortion to be enshrined in the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union.
"EU does not have specified competences"
The squad of Bioethic experts powerfully opposes this narrative. In its position published on 7 January 2026, it recalls that abortion issues do not fall within the competence of the European Union but stay the exclusive domain of the associate States.
Experts refer, among others, to the Treaty on the Functioning of the EU, the Charter of Fundamental Rights and the Accession Treaty of Poland, stressing that no of these papers respect abortion as right it does not give EU institutions the anticipation to finance or regulate it in a binding manner. ‘Abortion is never safe”
