The representation of Ukraine had to make changes in the costumes prepared for the Paralympic Games starting on Friday, as there was a map of the country within the limits of internationally recognised – Reuters said, citing the origin in the global Paralympic Committee.
– An alternate outfit was delivered within 24 hours and approved by IPC," reported Craig Spence, liable for communications in the Paralympic headquarters.
According to Ukrainian media, the first plan of typical outfits presented a map of Ukraine, covering all territories temporarily occupied by Russia. Under the IPC's dress regulations, national anthem texts, motivational phrases and public or political messages or slogans related to national identity are prohibited.
– The map of the country is in the second category, so 1 component of Ukrainian costume was not approved a fewer months ago. Hence the request to change – Spence pointed out.
In the fresh winter Olympics, Ukrainian Skeletonist Władysław Heraskewycz was disqualified and excluded from competition for utilizing a helmet with the image of Ukrainian athletes and trainers who died as a consequence of the Russian invasion, which began 4 years ago.
Ukraine, like any another countries, including Poland, intends to boycott the Friday ceremony of beginning the Paralympics in Verona after the IPC allowed Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete under their flags and with national anthems in case of triumph.
The Milan-Cortina Winter Paralympic Games will be held on 6-15 March. Ukraine will represent 35 athletes who will execute in 4 disciplines.
