Dr. Adam Sosnowski: perceive to what Pope Leon XIV said to Poles today. It must be emphasized – it was a message for us, for our ears! We were in St. Peter's Square listening to the catechesis of the Holy Father. That's not what he said to Americans, that's not what he said to Spaniards or Peruvians. But he virtually said to us,
I warmly greet Polish pilgrims. The image of fields sown with seeds harmoniously fits into the scenery of your beautiful native land. Let the grain of God’s word besides grow in you and produce abundant fruit. perceive carefully to this word to be able to make wise choices in personal, family, and social life. I bless you with my heart.
You heard Pope Leon's first statement. It is truly worth noting that Pope Leon XIV only addressed Poles so clearly and profoundly embedded in the spirituality of the national word. He spoke not only of the beauty of the "father land," but, more importantly, called for wise choices in personal, household and social life based on God's word. This is not an accidental mention to patriotism – understood not as a political slogan, but as a work for common good, for culture, for the conscience of the nation.
Only in relation to Poles have there been words about listening to God's Word with attention, due to the fact that it is the foundation not only for spiritual life, but besides for conscious, mature participation in public life. This can be read as a subtle reminder that religion and reason, the Gospel and elections – including those of citizens – are not separated from each other. His words echo John Paul II's teaching: freedom, if not serving the truth, turns into slavery.
This statement, although short, carries a strong message: Poland has a peculiar place in the heart of Pope Leon XIV – and a peculiar task in Europe and the Church.
