Formalities after divorce are seldom a priority, or alternatively the last thing people want to do right now. For thousands of divorcees, however, there is simply a request to act quickly: a visit to the office, a fee and a short term. According to government data in 2023, 11,000 people applied for a return to their surname before the wedding, and already 11.7 1000 in 2024. Now the state wants to simplify this process. The Ministry of Digitisation has prepared a bill that will let a message to be made online. This is part of a wider digital reform.

The existing rules are simple but not flexible. After the divorce, the individual has 3 months from the finality of the judgement to make a message to the civilian office (or to the consul), to show the identity paper and to pay a fee. In the country it is 11 PLN, abroad - 50 EUR. Overshooting means the request to initiate a longer administrative procedure. Only after completion of the formalities can the data be updated in documents, banks or at the workplace. For many people - especially those surviving far from the office or working during the beginning hours - it is an additional burden at an highly hard time for them.

The Ministry of Digital Affairs task provides for the launch of an e-service, which will let a message of return to the surname before the wedding to be made remotely. The online form, confirmation and automatic update of registers are intended to replace a visit to the civilian State Office. To this end, the household code, the bill on population registration and passport regulations are to be amended, so that digital state systems - PESEL, the registry of civilian position and the registry of passport papers - can handle specified applications.
