Omnibus Package: Business calls for little bureaucracy and clear rules

BusinessEurope, together with Euro MP Axel Voss, organised a debate on Omnibus and further steps in reducing the regulatory burden on European companies. The gathering was attended by representatives of EU institutions and business as well as the Confederation of Leviathan.

The debate included:

  • Markus J. Beyrer (Director-General BusinessEurope), who stressed that:

up to 86% of companies in the EU employment workers only to handle regulatory obligations, generating costs of 1.8% of turnover (for SMEs up to 2.5%). By comparison, the energy spending of companies after the energy crisis accounts for about 4% of their turnover.

  • Axel Voss (Member of the European Parliament), noted that

Europe must act much faster and braver than the Commission and the European Parliament's proposals so far.

In the discussion panel they besides spoke:

  • Alexandre Affre (Deputy Director-General BusinessEurope)
  • Sven Gentner (Directorate-General for Financial Stability, Financial Services and Capital Markets Union – DG FISMA, European Commission)
  • Ulrike Sapiro (Henkel)

During the discussion, the request to reduce the complexity of regulations, reduce costs and increase their usefulness for companies was highlighted.

In the next part of the gathering on business expectations for further EU action, they discussed:

  • Christoph Bausch (President of the Better Regulation Working Group)
  • Michael Wimmer (European Commission)
  • Mariusz Biedrzycki (Polish Permanent Representation to the EU)

Christoph Bausch noted that:

Two thirds of BusinessEurope's proposals to reduce regulatory burdens go beyond reporting issues, including administrative barriers, excessive adjustment costs and cross-border obstacles. Companies request a clear action plan and an EU timetable for reducing regulatory costs.

BusinessEurope besides launched a peculiar scoreboard to monitor advancement in implementation 68 proposals to reduce regulatory burdens until 2025. advancement has been achieved so far only with 8 actions – the pace of change needs to be accelerated so that Europe regains its investment attractiveness.

At the Confederacy meeting, Leviathan represented King Graf, Deputy Director-General for European Affairs and Luana Żak, Deputy Directors of the Leviathan Confederation’s Representation in Brussels.
