Few of us present associate Catholic novelist with the positivism of Teodor Jeske-Choiński. Positiveism was inherently linked to Scientism and poorness of everything “scientific”, even if it entered the sphere stricte metaphysical and philosophical. Jeske-Choiński broke out of this stream, his public works were aimed at all currents that threatened Catholic faith, household cohesion or conventional youth education.
Thanks to the Diocese Publishing home in Sandomierz, the revival of the fresh by Teodor Jeske-Choiński appeared After the golden fleeceaccompanied by an essay Scientific morality. The author proves in him that all ethics separated from religion is fiction. He wrote: “The positives and evolutionists wanted to make their own so - called independent, secular, technological ethic that would replace morality, the prevailing Christian societies before inventions of positivistic and evolutionary wisdom. For these masters have understood that neither man nor nations can be without any expressed ethical guidance." For golden fleece, technological Morality, Sandometer 2022, p. 373.)
Choiński wonders how it is possible that the positors combined the technological approach with the superstitious belief in the saving power of the empirical method, through which they went beyond its competence. The positiveists tried to wrap their eyes and glasses around everything about humanity: philosophy, anthropology, art, and even religion. Essay Scientific morality Proves it's impossible. It is not possible to draw conclusions from the examination of substance that will concern specified matters as human conscience, soul, or salvation. Jeske-Choiński argues: “Darwin felt that the explanation of evolution did not exclude God; Renan deluded about any universe lord, rocking in infinity: Comte, Littré and others were silent importantly as they approached the mystery; Spencer bludgeoned vaguely about the “unknown”, Claudius Bernard was angry at the unpleasant “le pourquoi des choices“The German materialists deny it.
Which of these wise men told the truth?
Having added to the positives and evolutionists inactive the French Spiritualists (Ravaisson, Franck, Janet, Caro, Jules Simon, etc.) and the German pessimists (Schopenhauer, Hartmann), we now have 20 different morals.
Who should be heard to be a good and honest man, or a fashionable jargon, in old times?
Instead of 1 moral code, engraved in the heart of man from the first minute of his existence, and developed by the efforts and longings of all civilized humanity, they devised the scholars uninvited as many as 20 respective ethics, no of which can convince." (Ibid., p. 416-418)
Thus Jeske-Choiński touched the core of the problem created by the positivists trying to throw religion on the pavement. How could they convince humanity, simple workers, to preserve the simple foundations of ethics? What were they expected to give as a replacement for the Decalogue? The concept of each of them was different!
"Ernest Renan, the 19th century juggler, cried out at a minute of forgetfulness, in a speech delivered at the French Academy on 4 August 1881: Are you talking about the origin of virtue? But gentlemen, no of us know anything about him, or alternatively we all know that we all find ourselves in our own hearts. Between the 20 theories of duty, he cannot withstand 1 criticism. The essence of virtue is that a virtuous man does not realize why he is doing well. The hero, considering his actions, would undoubtedly come to believe that he acted as a reckless fool. And just due to the fact that he wasn't meditating at the moment, he's a hero. He yielded to a higher order, an infallible oracle, a word, a voice that commands, without explaining to any of what he decides. The old cynic, forgetting for a minute that he was an “independent sage“, pointed out the right origin of ethics.” (Ibid., p. 418)
The positives cornered themselves. They entered areas where discipline has no right to enter, and specified a region is simply a human conscience. As another prominent thinker Victor Catherin T.J. wrote: “We see, therefore, that man is much little equipped to fight for life than animals in terms of inherited property. Yet, it is far superior to and conquering it, not by physical force, but by the power of its spirit. Man cannot owe this to the evolutionary process. In fact, another reason had to give him a ruling position. This origin is the mindful soul, the spiritual breath that the Creator breathed into him." Catholic View of the World31, Fr Adam Kuleszo)
It is precisely these truths that the "science" of atheists cannot endure.
Teodor Jeske-Choiński was the author of dozens of novels, novels, critical literary and public studies. His achievements were sentenced to oblivion by censorship of the Polish People's Republic of Poland, as well as deficiency of favour from academic literary scholars. This forgotten work is highly timely in the face of problems with knowing ethics in the Church itself, so it is worth recalling his tireless efforts to defend the fundamental truths of Christian civilization.
He besides collaborated with the most crucial press bodies of his time specified as: Weekly Review, Athenaum is Niva. He besides did not neglect to work for smaller centres like: Library of Christian Works is Peter Complaint Society.
