End of case Jerzy Owsiak vs. Barbara Piela. The court decided

The dispute between Jerzy Owsiak, president of the large Orchestra of Christmas Aid Foundation (WOŚP), and Barbara Piela, author of the animation “Plastus”, ended with a series of court trials which attracted public attention. There's fresh information on the case.

“Reflection. The pursuit of plastic dolls by politicians or public persons subject to criticism in courts and criminal cases is 1 large absurdity that only demonstrates weakness and deficiency of distance from 1 another. Case Jerzy Owsiak vs. Barbara Piela – context

In 2019, an animation by Barbara Piela was aired on TVP Info’s 20th anniversary program, in which Jerzy Owsiak and then president of Warsaw, Hanna Gronkiewicz-WaltzThey were presented utilizing plasticine figures. Animation met with criticism from Owsiak, who accused Care of promoting anti-Semitic content and suggested that her work could have contributed to an atmosphere of hatred leading to tragic events specified as the death of president Gdańsk, Paul Adamovich.

In consequence to these accusations, Barbara Piela filed a suit against Jerzy Owsiak, accusing him of violating individual property through unwarranted accusations. In October 2022 the court ruled in favour of Piela, obliging Oatsiak to publically apologize and pay PLN 500 to her.

“I won the trial with Jerzy Owsiak! There was a violation of individual property – at the press conference 13-4/01/19 he made unfounded suggestions linking me to the crimes of Auschwitz and the origin of Paul Adamowicz's death. The animation was not anti-Semitic. I thank Counselor Wdowczyk and Witness M. Kurce" - Piela wrote in social media at the time.

After his verdict, Owsiak expressed his disappointment by writing on Facebook: “This news is simply a thunderbolt! I have a fire in my heart. And it's getting harder to hold on to. My heart is slow dying”

However, the case did not end at this stage. In the following months there was a criminal process involving animation itself. In September 2024, Warsaw court sentenced Barbara Piela and writer Michał Rachonia for 5 months restrictions on freedom in the form of social work and obliged them to contribute PLN 25 000 to the WEDP. This judgement afraid allegations of defamation and violation of individual property by issuing the aforementioned animation.
