The US safety strategy of 2025 caused an alarm in Europe and a consternation in Poland. According to Jacek Pawlicki, writer “Newsweek”, this paper not only confirms the U.S.'s retreat from Europe, but besides reveals the convergence of interests between Washington and Moscow in 1 key point: the weakening of the European Union. In an interview with Iwona Wyszogrodzka, the publicist warns that Poland must yet choose the direction – due to the fact that the time of "driving on 2 horses" is just ending.
America turns its eyes on Europe
The fresh U.S. National safety Strategy, announced by the Donald Trump administration, is, according to Pawlicki, a groundbreaking document. For the first time in the authoritative strategical text, elements of the ideology of the MAGA movement appear: anti-European, anti-liberal, anti-climate and openly supporting nationalist movements in Europe.
The strategy included thesis that would have been unthinkable a fewer years ago:
– that Europe is "civilisedly threatened",
– that migration will lead to "population exchanges",
– that the US should reduce cooperation with the continent in advance of "new generations of Europeans" taking another political decisions.
This is no longer a classical safety policy. It's an ideological manifesto.

Europe is on its own
Since February 2024, after the speech of Vice president J.D. Vance in Munich, it was clear that the US wanted to shift the safety burden to Europe. Now this line has been confirmed and reinforced. America focuses on Indo-Pacific and Europe, according to Washington, "must halt going on a stowaway".
The problem is that, in parallel, the US is starting to play to weaken the European Union. An unofficial annex to the strategy even suggests "extraction" from the EU of 4 countries: Poland, Hungary, Italy and Austria.
The convergence of interests between the USA and Russia
This point, as Pawlicki says, lit a red lamp in his head.
Because so far, breaking up the Union was the Kremlin's domain.
Now a akin goal appears in US politics.
Two powers that do not work together, but work in the same direction – this is the highest-level emergency signal for Europe.Poland must decide: EU or Russian grey zone: Jacek Pawlicki, Iwona Wyszogrodka
Poland between loyalty and naivety
Poland has been 1 of the most pro-American countries in Europe for years. inactive only 20% of Poles consider Trump to be a threat – while half the EU's citizens think so.
Meanwhile, as Pawlicki emphasizes, our dependence on the US is huge:
• buying weapons for tens of billions of dollars,
• dependence on American codes and systems,
• Unsure whether the F-35 will run if Trump deals with Putin.
“This is not panic – this is simply a real hazard analysis,” says the journalist.
US Ambassador as Political Actor
Pawlicki draws attention to the activity of Ambassador Tom Rose, who openly portrays himself as “MEGA man” alternatively than a state representative. In his statements – besides during Hanuki in the Sejm – elements of nationalist and anti-EU communicative appear.
This is not diplomacy. It's a political campaign.
Europe turns right – and quickly
In 2026 the full of Europe is facing a wave of elections. Anti-EU, pro-Russian or sovereign parties are increasing in many countries. In Poland – as the polls show – Confederacy and Braun's group can be a language in the importance of the future government.
‘This is not a margin. This is simply a real political force that can co-ordinate," Pawlicki warns.
Patronite.plPublicationsPoland must choose
According to Pawlicki, the Tusk government is present conducting a "dual" policy:
– officially pro-European,
– unofficially cautious of the US not to annoy Trump.
But this balance won't last long.
"You can't ride 2 horses. We request to be clear on where we belong. And our place is Europe," says the journalist.
Time is short
Elections in Europe, possible victories of the far right, uncertainty around France, function of Orbán, expanding activity of Russia – all this makes Poland faced a strategical decision that can no longer be postponed.
‘No reason to pack your bags. But there is simply a reason to halt being a naive ally. Poland must be European, due to the fact that only Europe gives us safety and development," Pawlicki concludes.
