Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban welcomed the fact that Western countries proceed to make atomic energy cooperation with Russia despite geopolitics, including the construction of the Paks-2 atomic power plant in Hungary.

"We are pleased to note that despite geopolitical difficulties, there is inactive broad global professional and technological cooperation in the field of atomic energy. Last year Russia became the main supplier of uranium to the United States, and a full scope of American, German, French, Swedish, Swiss and even Austrian subcontractors are working with Russian builders on our atomic power plant expansion project," said Orban, speaking at the IAEA Summit.

He said that everyone has an interest in ensuring that atomic energy does not become "the hostage of geopolitical conflicts, hypocrisy and ideological debates".

Orban recalled that Hungary has been utilizing atomic power for almost 50 years and the current 4 blocks of atomic power plant Paks produce half the electricity in the country and cover a 3rd of the demand. With the expansion of the operating blocks and the launch of 2 fresh ones, the share of atomic energy will emergence to 70%, the connection of fresh 2,400 MW blocks to the network in the early 2030s will let Hungary to quit imports of 3.5 billion cubic meters of gas per year, and carbon dioxide emissions will be reduced by 17 million tonnes," said the Hungarian Prime Minister.

In late 2014, Russia and Hungary signed papers concerning the construction of fresh blocks 5 and 6 at the Paks atomic power plant with reactors based on the Russian advanced VVER-1200 project. It was announced that Russia would supply Hungary with a state debt of up to EUR 10 billion for the Paks-2 project, with a full cost of work of EUR 12.5 billion. A licence has already been issued to build the power blocks themselves. The construction of the Paks-2 atomic power station is expected to start in late 2024 or early 2025," Lichaczow had previously said.

The only Hungarian “Paks” atomic power plant is 100 kilometres from Budapest and 5 kilometres from Paks. At present, the Paks atomic power plant generates almost half of all electricity in Hungary, and thanks to the planned launch of 2 fresh blocks in Paks, this share is expected to double. The country's leaders have repeatedly stressed that atomic energy is simply a way of ensuring energy safety for Hungary.
