Hungary must prosecute a strong abroad policy with major objectives and legitimate visions, said Prime Minister Viktor Orbán at a conference commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Hungarian Institute of abroad Affairs.

– Hungary does not want to be a disciple of another power, but a master of himself," said Orbán. "To be successful, we must besides adopt a extremist tactical stance, due to the fact that this is how we can negociate effectively. The word “radical” in Hungarian may disagree from most Western languages. It means adopting a extremist position that reaches the heart of the matter: Hungarian radicalism is an intellectual phenomenon.

The Hungarian Prime Minister stressed that, according to him, a national-interest-based abroad policy combines the best elements of a abroad policy based on the values of this ora based on business.

– abroad policy based on national interest combines the best advantages of realism and idealism," he said. – The word “national” is simply a substantive word, refers to an idealist, and “interest” refers to a realistic approach that requires a peculiar way of thinking.

Foreign policy of a state based on business can never be dogmatic and cannot become such, Orbán argued.

– The most crucial task is to recognise and realize the national interest in each situation and to take action on this basis," he added.

The Prime Minister said that, although Hungary is not a large power, it cannot be a "cool" global partner but must defend their own interests. –

We are not a large power, and yet we claim our own abroad policy and anticipate others, even bigger than us, to accept this claim," said the leader. "History has condemned Hungary to set more ambitious targets than their strength and economical situation allowed. For this reason, it cannot afford to quit the opportunities abroad policy creates.
