It is to be 1 of the most modern units in the Polish Army. 37 The Radiotechnical Battalion will be liable for early detection and recognition of threats in airspace, especially at the east and northeastern borders of the country. Recruitment is underway to the unit, which is already building the foundation for the Barbara reconnaissance aerostat system.
37 The Radiotechnical Battalion will be equipped with advanced radio systems, passive listening stations and – in subsequent years – reconnaissance aerobics Barbara. Formated unit which is part of 3 Wrocław Radiotechnical BrigadeHe's recruiting right now.
The battalion will operate in respective locations in north-eastern and south-eastern Poland, among others in the counties of Łódź, Nowomiej, Elk, Zambrowski and Więc Mazowieckie. This is due, among another things, to the fact that the entity will usage innovative technologies and specialized radio-location equipment, which is simply a key component of the country's defence system.
Gen. Bieniek: modern designation is the basis
The east border of Poland becomes 1 of the most crucial areas of modern radio recognition. 37 The Radiotechnical Battalion, is to operate where the scope of classical ground radar ends – detecting drones, balloons, and another hard to identify objects.
“Poland is catching up and investing in modern systems that are resistant to interference and let to detect even the most subtle signals in our airspace,” says Mieczysław Bieniek, erstwhile deputy commander of NATO strategical transformation. – Battalion will affect the ability to detect objects – will increase the effectiveness of mark detection and recognition. This is not only due to Radiotechnology and radioelectronics, but besides from listening systems connected to ground passive stations, working day and night, integrated into a single strategy for recognizing and indicating targets, says Gen. Bieniek. It besides stresses the importance of the battalion's presence at the east border. “We request to make a immense logistical and technological effort, due to the fact that the price of safety is great,” he adds.
The presence of a unit at the border besides has a deterrent function. The fresh radio-technical battalion is to make it clear that Polish airspace – especially at the border – is under constant observation.
Barbara defends Polish heaven
The ‘Barbara’ programme provides for the transportation of 4 exploratory aerostats from the United States. This is equipment that the Polish Army has not yet had. The contract, worth nearly a billion dollars, was signed in May 2024, and the construction of infrastructure for systems continues. This agreement defines our security. Poland will be the second country in the planet to usage this kind of strategy – said Deputy Prime Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz after the agreement was signed.
Aerostats are to detect rocket missiles, drones, aircraft and submarines. Their radar scope is over 300 kilometers. The higher it is, the more it sees. Aerostatics suspended at about 4 km in tallness let detection of targets that are invisible for classical ground radars: low-flying drones, maneuvering rockets or aircraft trying to avoid detection, explains Gen. Bieniek. – Aerostats are embedded in the full air defence system, which will let us to respond to hybrid threats and full control space at borders – he explains.
The first aerostat is to be delivered by the end of this year, the remaining 3 in the 3rd 4th of 2027 and should scope full operational readiness by the end of next year. Aerostats will be stationed along the east and northeastern borders of Poland, monitoring all metre of airspace at the border. – These systems will let our operators to analyse and respond in real time to any kind of threat. They will be our eyes in airspace and a deterrent to any possible aggressor," added Gen. Mieczysław Bieniek.
