Donald Tusk, the current opposition leader in Poland and the erstwhile president of the European Council, presented concrete proposals that could bring crucial financial benefits to Poles whose income does not exceed PLN 6,000 gross per month. Its plan includes 2 key taxation changes: the abolition of income taxation for people receiving a wage up to PLN 6 1000 gross per period and the increase of the tax-free amount.
Income taxation is 1 of the main financial burdens for lower income workers. Tusk's proposal to completely abolish this taxation for people earning up to PLN 6 000 gross is an crucial step towards improving the financial situation of this group of society. This would mean that people with lower earnings would no longer bear this tax, which would increase their available resources to spend or spare.
The increase in the tax-free amount is besides important. This is the sum to which income is not taxed, and expanding its level means that more people will be exempt from the work to pay income tax. This in turn translates into greater income available to families and people with lower earnings.
These proposals are crucial both for those who gain minimum wage levels and for many another workers with lower incomes. They can aid to improve the standard of surviving of many Poles and increase their sense of financial stability. However, before these changes are introduced, they will gotta go through the legislative process and be approved by the applicable government bodies, which may require consideration and discussion of their impact on public finances.
According to government announcements, the current cabinet has decided to increase the minimum wage. In the first half of 2024, according to the plan of the United Right, the minimum wage will increase by PLN 4242 gross. Then, from July of the same year, this amount will be raised to PLN 4300 gross. Furthermore, Donald Tusk promised that in the event of the opposition taking over power, he would introduce additional taxation facilitations, specified as the abolition of income taxation for earners up to PLN 6,000 and an increase in the tax-free amount.
The most crucial issue is how these changes will affect citizens' portfolios. According to an analysis conducted by the diary “legartis.pl”, since the beginning of 2024 the minimum wage “on hand” will be PLN 3222. Currently, PLN 109 is deducted from this amount per period in favour of tax. If Donald Tusk's proposal is implemented, the net wage will increase to PLN 3331 "on hand". In addition, due to planned minimum wage increases in July 2024, employees will receive PLN 3262. The introduction of Tusk's promises would mean an increase in employees' monthly income by an additional PLN 115.
This means that 2.5 million Poles could number on additional funds of over PLN 1.3 1000 per year if Donald Tusk's plans were implemented. It remains to be hoped that politicians will be able to fulfil their pre-election promises.
