The United States Administration expresses concerns that Iran may blame the US or Israel for the chopper crash in which the president of Iran, Ebrahim Raisi, died, reports Politico.
According to Politico sources, Washington is closely following Tehran's reaction to Raisi's tragic death. Although the position quo in the mediate East region is expected to be retained, American officials fear that Iran's accusations may lead to an escalation of tensions with Israel.
A tense anticipation of search results
Politico reports that the Americans spent Sunday eagerly awaiting the results of the search for the missing helicopter. The White home analyzed how a disaster could affect the situation in the mediate East and wondered who Iran would blame for the event.
– For a time, the question, “is this how planet War III begins?” did not seem crazy, said 1 of Politico's interviewers. Another pointed out that until Iran "transfers no blame, chances of wider regional conflict stay low".
Helicopter crash with president of Iran
On Sunday, a chopper carrying an Iranian president crashed into a dense fog in a mountainous area in northwestern Iran, close the border with Azerbaijan. On board were besides the abroad Minister Hosejn Amir Abdollahijan, politician of East Azerbaijan state Malek Rahmati and Ayatollah Mohammad Ali Ale Hashem.
The chief of the Iranian Red Crescent, Pir Hossein Kolivand, reported that all the passengers and chopper crew died in the crash. A committee was appointed to analyse the causes of this tragic accident.
National Grief in Iran
Ajatollah Ali Chamenei, Iran's ultimate leader, announced a five-day national mourning after the President's death. He added that the responsibilities of the head of state until the election would be performed by the erstwhile first vice president, Mohammad Mochber.
An early presidential election in Iran was scheduled for June 28. This decision aims to guarantee continuity of power and stableness in the country after the President's abrupt death.
Concerns for regional stability
The chopper crash and president Raisi's death and possible accusations against the US or Israel put the US administration in a hard position. American officials hope that Iran will not decide to transfer the blame for the disaster, which could importantly exacerbate the situation in the mediate East region and lead to unpredictable consequences.
