The war in Ukraine has been going on for over 3 years. Despite the deficiency of a clear victory, Russia is expanding its influence and investigating the unity of Europe. In September of that year, the concept of hybrid war permanently entered the Polish dictionary, revealing the fresh face of modern conflicts. Today, it increasingly takes on a real dimension – besides over the Polish sky, where drones become a tool for provocation and test for European security.

When in early September Polish airspace was breached by a series of unidentified drones coming from the east, Prime Minister Donald Tusk said crucial words: "This situation puts us closer than always to an open conflict after planet War II". According to the Ministry of Defence, respective to more than 20 objects were registered, any of which were shot down by Polish and allied anti-aircraft defence systems. Russia officially does not admit attacks, but the interviews of Poland and the Allied States have no uncertainty about Russian responsibility. There is simply a question of intent that U.S. president Donald Trump questioned. In this situation, the head of the Ministry of abroad Affairs, Radosław Sikorski, pointed out that: "There is no uncertainty that this was not an accident at all." Another victim of provocation was Denmark. The drones flew into the vicinity of Copenhagen Airport. As many as 31 flights were diverted to another facilities, resulting in delays. About 100 flights were cancelled due to the breach of the country's airspace. The Danish authorities were careful not to state clearly the perpetrator, but did not regulation out Russia's fault.

Most wars in past were not just in trenches. Today, however, battlefields have moved even further, going beyond our visions of WŚ II films. alternatively of tanks and rockets, states and non-state actors usage indirect means specified as cyberattacks, disinformation or drones. Unmanned aircraft let destabilizing activities. In fresh years, they have besides become increasingly cheaper in production and so more accessible. Their usage allows you to test your opponent's reaction, test his defence systems, and origin fear in society without crossing the final limit. Drones have undergone tremendous evolution, from simple reconnaissance machines to precise tools, capable of transferring explosives weighing up to respective 100 kilograms. Russia uses them widely in the war against Ukraine, as confirmed by many analyses of investigation centres and global organisations. Versions of Gerbera drones, which originate from the Iranian Shaheds, were found in Poland. The biggest trap of these tools from the point of view of the victims of aggression is the difficulty in determining whether they are real, armed missiles, or decoys that are designed to induce the opponent to respond costlyly and origin anxiety in society. The increased threat has led the European institutions to act. In a State of the EU address of 10 September, president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen called for the strengthening of defence systems. "Europe must perceive to the call of the Baltic countries and accelerate the construction of the alleged drone wall", said the politician. The "wall of drones" would mean cooperation between border states and a combination of radar, detection and neutralisation systems. From physical capture systems to signal disrupters. However, the plan is only at an early phase and large amounts of backing and time are needed to implement it.

The War of the 21st Century

A hybrid war isn't just a drone fight. It is simply a way of conducting a conflict that combines actions in many fields, including information and economics. It is not an open fight, but a slow weakening of the opponent and influencing his society. Russia began utilizing these methods on a large scale after 2014. At that time, she first combined military actions with disinformation and cyber attacks, as well as the usage of alleged green men, or soldiers without national markings. Since then, the hybrid strategy has become its main instrument of influence in Europe – from interference in elections to attempts to destabilise neighbouring countries. The goal is always the same: undermining trust in state institutions and weakening Western unity. The strength of these actions increased markedly after the start of the war in Ukraine. Since Poland became active in helping its neighbour, it has become 1 of the main objectives of Russian propaganda. At the same time, Russia is besides trying to grow its influence in another European countries. A good example is Romania, where the Constitutional Court annulled the first circular of presidential elections after reports of external interference. Reports from Romanian intelligence showed that the run of the ultra-right candidate Calin Georgescu was supported by organized social media activity on platforms specified as TikTok and Telegram.

Drones, cyber attacks and disinformation campaigns have become fresh tools of influence to test the responses of countries and societies. Modern aggression can run almost unnoticed, strengthening the influence of the aggressor. This is shown by interference in elections, social media manipulations and subtle provocations in European countries. Effective defence so requires not only the armed force, but besides the resilience of information and critical reasoning of society. societies that can separate between facts and manipulation, but besides strong global cooperation to counter fresh threats.
