The vast majority of Poles support the construction of military fortifications on the border with Russia and Belarus and anti-aircraft shelters for civilians. These are the results of the latest IBRiS poll commissioned by Radio ZET.
The investigation shows that as many as 83.9% of Poles think that Polish authorities should take action to strengthen the country's defence by building military fortifications and anti-aircraft shelters. Among the respondents who support these actions, 51% responded "yes" and 32.9 percent "more or little so".
Only 8.7 per cent of respondents are opposed, of which 0.4 per cent replied "no" and 8.3 per cent "no". 7.4% of respondents were undecided on this issue.
Methodology of investigation – Poles on strengthening
The survey was conducted by CATI (Computer Assisted telephone Interviewing) method on 10-11 May 2024 on a typical example of 1071 people.
Political-military context
The results of the survey reflect current social sentiments in Poland, which are understandable in the context of increasing tensions at the east border of the country. In the face of possible threats from Russia and Belarus, many Poles feel it is essential to take decisive steps to guarantee national security.
Building military fortifications specified as bunkers, trenches and anti-tank obstacles can importantly increase the country's defence capabilities. The construction of anti-aircraft shelters for civilians is besides seen as an essential means of protection for possible air strikes.
Expert opinions
National safety experts indicate that building defence infrastructure at the east border of Poland can be crucial for expanding the sense of safety among citizens and for real strengthening the defence of the country. In the context of current geopolitical developments, specified action is justified and can contribute to deterring possible aggressors. Poles on strengthenings spoke rather clearly.
