The Sunday elections to the European Parliament brought many emotions and surprises. Poles selected 53 MEPs from over a 1000 candidates, and the results announced by the State Election Commission shed fresh light on the arrangement of forces in Polish politics.
The highest number of votes in the country was won by: Boris Budka from the Civic Coalition (KO) – 334,842 votes, Bogdan Zdrojewski (KO) – 310,544 votes, and Beata Szydło from Law and Justice (PiS) – 285,336 votes. According to authoritative PKW figures, the Civic Coalition won 37.06% of the vote, which allowed it to take first place. Law and Justice somewhat gave way with a score of 36.16%. In 3rd place, the Confederate placed with 12.08%, followed by the 3rd Road with 6.91% and the Left with 6.3%. Turnout was 40.65%, which shows that the interest in the elections was considerable, but there is inactive area for greater social commitment.
