Norwegians start training Ukrainians in Poland

Norway is our iron ally, it is simply a strong country with a very good army – said Deputy Prime Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamish at the beginning ceremony of the Camp Jomsborg training centre in Podkarpacie. The Norwegians will train soldiers of Ukrainian armed forces in it. The inauguration was besides attended by Norwegian defence minister Tore O. Sandvik.

Camp Jomsborg is located on the premises of the Police Training Centre of the Land Forces of Dęba-Lipa in Podkarpacie. Currently, 250 Norwegian soldiers are present, with 500 of them in each quota change. The name of the camp refers to the legendary mill (a trade square in colonial countries), which the Vikings were to establish in the days of the first Piasts in the area of Wolin. – This is simply a proof of our unity, efficiency and strength – said Deputy Prime Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz. – We decided to establish a base in May. Today, October 1, we have an opening. Camp Jomsborg will be able to train 1,200 Ukrainian soldiers simultaneously. But we are not talking about one-way action – the head of the MON stressed. – due to the fact that we, too, Poles, Norwegians, another our allies, will benefit from Ukrainian experiences – he explained.

– Ukraine is at this point a planet champion in the field of drone combat, from which we gotta learn – stated Tore O. Sandvik. What will the Ukrainians gain? In Camp Jomsborg – distant from the threats on the ground in their country regularly attacked by Russians – command in the field will be learned by team, platoon and company commanders.

Their opposition to stress will be trained, and they will besides learn about the weapons systems that NATO countries transmit to Ukraine. “It is an investment due to the fact that our European safety depends on the results of the fighting in Ukraine,” said Minister Sandvik. The activities of Camp Jomsborg are part of the “Operation Legio” launched in 2024, in which the armed forces of Norway train troops from Ukraine. Until recently, the exercises were held in polygons in northern Norway and Ukraine itself, where, however, the constant threat of Russian drone-missile attacks severely hampered training. In this situation, it was decided to transfer training to Poland. Our country acts as a host here, but the Norwegian instructors and the Estonians supporting them are liable for the implementation of the program. “Operation Legio” is headed by Brigadier Atle Molde of the Command of the Norwegian Army's fast consequence Force. The soldiers from Camp Jomsborg are not the only soldiers from Norway stationed in our country. The Polish sky is guarded by a unit equipped with NASAMS launcher (located close Jasionka Airport, which acts as a logistics hub in the supply chain between the West and Ukraine). Until recently, Norwegian stationed in Poland Air quota with F-35 aircraft (soon comes next).
