During his visit to Tanzania, the German president Frank-Walter Steinmeier asked for forgiveness for crimes committed in this African country by the Reich in the early 20th century.
Earlier, the Oder was considered genocide committed in Namibia. According to the negotiated agreement, the b. Colony in South-West Africa will receive €1.1 billion in compensation for the massacre of Herero and Nam. However, Germany avoids the terms "reparations" and "compensation" in order to avoid paying claims to another countries, including Poland.
– I bow to the victims of German colonial domination. And as president of Germany, I would like to ask forgiveness for what Germany did to your ancestors here," said Frank-Walter Steinmeier during a visit to the museum dedicated to the Maji-Maji uprising, or rebellion of about 20 African tribes in the confederate areas of German East Africa. Between 1905 and 1907, there were massacres in the colony that ruled between 1880 and 1918, in which about 200-300 000 Africans were murdered during the uprising and due to a wave of famine which was artificially induced to break opposition and punish insurgents.
The German president called for joint work on the preservation of memory and promised to return to Tanzania the remains of human remains inactive in Germany. During his visit Steinmeier met with the descendants of Chief Songea Mbano, the then rebel leader who was hanged and beheaded by the Germans along with 66 of his militants. His descendants inactive search the chief's skull, which was most likely later transported to a museum in the Reich.
