Former U.S. president is dead. He was 100 years old

The beginning of a political career

James Carter was born on October 1, 1924, in Plains, southwest Georgia, to a household of farmers increasing peanuts and operating a local store. He graduated from the Naval Academy in Annapolis in 1946 and served as an officer on submarines until 1953. After the service ended, he took over part of his family's farm to grow peanuts. As a wealthy businessman and associate of the Baptist church known for his anti-racist views, he was elected to the state legislature of Georgia in 1962, starting his political career.

In 1974, being inactive a little-known politician, Jimmy Carter announced his start in the presidential election. Despite this, he managed to defeat rivals in the Democratic primary and later besides then president Gerald Ford. According to Donald Pienkos, a historian from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Carter's triumph in the election was, among others, the consequence of support from the Polonia.

Nobel Peace Prize

In later years Jimmy Carter focused on social and humanitarian activities, engaging himself personally in the work of the Habitat for Humanity organization, which builds homes for the poor. He besides founded the Carter Center, an organization promoting peace, human rights and the fight against infectious diseases. He received the Nobel Peace Prize for his activity in 2002. Despite his advanced age, Carter remained active in both organizations even after he was 90. In 2014, he published his autobiography.

Health problems

Jimmy Carter struggled with wellness problems for many years. In 2015, he defeated brain cancer, but in 2019 he underwent surgery to remove force on the brain after further complications. In February 2023, he was taken into infirmary care. Although the reason for this decision has not been revealed, it is known that Carter has been treated for metastatic skin cancer in fresh years.

A fewer months later, he profoundly survived the death of his wife Rosalynn, with whom he spent 77 years of his life together.

National Grief

US president Joe Biden announced on Sunday night on Monday that on January 9, 2025 he would be declared a national mourning day throughout the United States after the death of erstwhile president Jimmy Carter.
