“Harbin, formerly Charbin, is most likely the most “Polish” city in China – almost 10 1000 Poles lived here during the highest period. Those employed in the construction of the East China Railway lived not only in the city itself, but besides in stations along railway lines. In Harbin there are inactive tangible traces of this presence: the longest bridge over Sungari, the erstwhile Polish Catholic Church, the sugar factory, the cigaret mill of the Łopato brothers, the villa of Władysław Kowalski, the owner of extended forest concessions, 1 of the most prosperous people in Manchuria," says Magdalena Stoszek-Deng.
