Moldovan president Maia Sandu informed that she had personally contacted Alexandru Muntianu to propose that he be appointed Prime Minister. She explained that the decision to appoint Muntian was taken after a joint discussion with members of the governing organization Action and Solidarity (PAS).
"When Mr Dorin Recean informed us that he no longer wanted to service as Prime Minister, we met with respective colleagues from PAS and discussed what profile the fresh head of government should have," said Sandu. “We felt that this should be an economical profile due to the fact that for many reasons – nonsubjective and subjective – the economical situation of the country is difficult.”
According to the President, Muntian's candidacy was chosen from among respective proposals as the most suitable.
"We analysed respective names, and then I contacted him personally. After any time we managed to get his consent," Sandu said.
The president added that she had known Muntian since the 1990s and observed his professional development, identifying him as “a man with quite a few managerial and life experience.”
Let us remind that on 14 October, the Moldovan authorities officially confirmed their intention to nominate Alexandr Muntian, a businessman who has lived in Ukraine for more than 20 years, as Prime Minister.
In turn, the Moldovan media revealed that Muntianu was to cooperate with a sanctioned lawyer from Cyprus. Following the publication of the reports, the candidate issued a message in which he denied any illegal activity and clarified the circumstances of cooperation.
