Robert Smoktunowicz, a Polish lawyer, politician and erstwhile senator, died at the age of 62. Known for his active activity in the field of law and politics, he built his position for years as both a lawyer and a parliamentarian. Born on 30 January 1962 in Warsaw, he had a rich résumé, covering both his legal and political career. His death is simply a failure to the Polish political and legal scene.
Robert Smoktunowicz was already active in public life at the beginning of his career. In the early 1980s, he was a associate of the Independent Student Association at the University of Warsaw. He participated in the activity of the Young Poland Movement, and in 1987 he co-founded the Real Policy Movement, which later became the Union of Real Policy. He was besides co-founder of the economical Society in Warsaw, which aimed to make the Polish economy.
As a politician, he sat in the legislature from 2001 to 2007, winning the senator's mandate twice. He was active in the work on the regulation of law and the protection of human rights, serving in legislature committees specified as the Legislative and regulation of Law Committee and the Human Rights Committee. He was a associate of the Civic Platform, however, in September 2007 he resigned his membership of this party.

After graduating from the University of Warsaw in 1986, Smoktunowicz started his bar practice, gaining reputation in the legal environment. He co-directed the law firm R. Smoktunowicz & L. Falandysz, known in the capital. In 1995, he became a legal advisor to the Italian embassy in Poland and later an expert at the National Broadcasting Council. Over the years, he has combined his lawyer's work with public activity, gaining experience in both law and media, where he has published columnons in "Home & Market" and "Gentleman" magazines.
In fresh years of his legal career, in September 2023, he was removed from the list of lawyers, which ended his long-time occupation in the profession of attorney.
Private life and relationships
Robert Smoktunowicz was married twice. His first wife was writer Hanna Lis and later Zofia Ragankiewicz. He was the father of 2 children. Despite the turbulent periods in individual life, he remained engaged in public life until the end of his career.

In 2009, Smoktunowicz joined the Democratic Party, where he served as treasurer. In 2015, he attempted to re-enter the Senate, moving as an independent candidate, but without success. For years, his activity in politics and almost varied and abounded in challenges.
