W Łódź creates a fresh railway tunnel as part of the task of the Central Communication Port (CPK). It will be the second specified facility in the city, but unlike the 1 built by PKP PLK, this will be dedicated mainly to long-distance trains, including the advanced velocity Railways (KDP).
Draft
Łódź, a city with a rich industrial history, will shortly witness the implementation of an ambitious infrastructure project. The Central Communication Port Company (CPK) has made a key decision by selecting a contractor to deal with the task of hollowing out the underground artillery for the trains of the advanced velocity Railway (KDP). See besides After the analysis of the offers, CPK indicated a construction consortium conducted by PORR as the contractor of this task. The value of the contract amounts to an awesome amount of PLN 1 billion 761 million.
Selection of the contractor
The choice was not accidental – the PORR offer was assessed at the highest by the tender committee, which took into account not only the price (which represents 70% of the weight of the evaluation), but also, which is highly crucial for specified a complex task the competence of the possible contractor (30%).
Scope
The scope of the work to be done before the PORR consortium is enormous. It includes not only the self-drawling of the tunnel in the section from the future Retkinia chamber to the chamber located in the area of Łódź Fabryczna station, but besides the construction of all essential accompanying infrastructure. We are talking about safety, ventilation, power supply and any another method elements that let for the efficient and safe operation of this underground railway route.
Tunnel parameters
The dimension of the tunnel will be about 4.6 kilometres and the diameter will scope about 14 metres. TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine) technology will be utilized to build it – a mechanized hollow shield that will bite into the ground under the city step by step. Inside the spacious structure there will be 2 tracks, which will let simultaneous movement of trains in both directions.
Train speed
Although on the tunnel section, due to the specificity of the run in urbanised terrain, trains will travel at a velocity of up to 160 km/h, the tunnel itself is simply a key fragment of the KDP line, which on open sections will let to velocity up to 350 km/h.
Protection of urban tissue
As CPK representatives emphasize, the precedence for the construction is to defend urban tissue. The company has already commissioned additional detailed method expertise of the buildings along the planned course.
Line Y
The Łódź KDP tunnel is not an investment in itself. It is simply a key component of a much larger puzzle – the fresh railway line No 85, frequently called the ‘igreek’ or ‘Y’. This strategical transport corridor is expected to radically change the map of railway connections in Poland in the coming years. By 2032 it is to connect Warsaw, the planned airport of CPK and Łódź.
Further plans
Further, until 2035, the line “Y” branched, allowing fast travels from the centre of the country besides to Wrocław and Poznań.
Strategic dimension
As Maciej Lasek, the typical of the government for the CPK and the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure noted, this investment has a strategical dimension for the full country. This is not only an improvement in transport, but besides a powerful improvement impulse for the Łódź region, bringing tangible benefits to its inhabitants.
Long-distance tunnel CPK
The CPK long-distance tunnel is the foundation that will let for a imagination of fast and competitive rail connections, capable of competing with air or automobile transport on key national routes.
Coordination with another investments
It is besides worth noting that the CPK task is closely coordinated with another crucial investment presently implemented in Łódź – the construction of an agglomeration tunnel by PKP Polish Railway Lines. Although both tunnels will run under the city, their functions will complement each other.
Schedule planned
According to the plans, the agreement with the PORR consortium is to be signed in the current 4th (second 4th of 2025). Since its conclusion, the contractor will have 48 months to complete the full scope of work. However, the final date of signature of the contract shall be subject to any cancellations and settlements of another participants. Nevertheless, optimistic assumptions foretell that the first construction work straight related to tunnel drilling could begin in 2025.
