The Polish Air Force will shortly welcome a fresh associate in their fleet – a 5th generation F-35 fighter, which is already in preparation for delivery. Therefore, the WP General Staff announced a competition for the Polish name for these advanced machines. The competition, which gained large popularity, was announced on the Air Force Facebook profile and on their X-platform account.
Traditionally, Polish aviation gives its machines names that reflect prey and strength. An example is F-16, known in Poland as Hawk, even though its first name is "Fighting Falcon". “The tradition of our aviation is to give names to predatory birds, which is to reflect the features of these high-tech machines,” says Bartosz Głowacki, aviation expert and editor-in-chief of the magazine “Report”.
Name for fighter F-35? “Harpia”
Głowacki suggests that the appropriate name for F-35 could be “Harpia” – an global name and well associated with strength and power. Harpia is besides the main name of the program under which F-35 fighters were purchased for Poland, which further emphasizes the relation of the name with the aircraft.

The submission of proposals for names takes place through comments under posts on these social profiles. The competition committee looks forward to creative and accurate names by 29 April. After that date, a jury composed of experts and representatives of the Air Force will choice a winner who will be invited to the authoritative presentation of the first copy of the F-35.
This is simply a unique chance to have a real impact on the past of Polish aviation. The winning name will not only be an authoritative designation for the Polish F-35, but will besides contribute to further building national pride around our defence forces. So it is worth following the improvement of this competition and waiting for the results to be announced with anticipation.
