EU-US Customs Negotiations are ongoing

The time Donald Trump left for the countries under customs to negociate is approaching the half-mate. The agreement was signed by Britain and an agreement was besides announced with China. Until recently, the European Union, which is the 4th US trading partner, seemed to have made no advancement in the talks. However, negotiations continue. According to the Euro MP Michał Szczerba of the PO, the position of the Union should be hard and, above all, unanimous. The occasion for discussion may be Trump's visit to the June NATO summit in The Hague.

The work issue that Trump imposed on exports of European goods is somewhat suspended. These general duties apply, which have been introduced globally at 10%. Trump unfortunately introduced duties on aluminium and steel, besides on the automotive manufacture – says news agency Michał Szczerba, associate of the European Parliament from the Civic Platform. – On the another hand, the European Union is inactive waiting to respond, hoping that we will work out any solutions within this 90-day period. On the another hand, I want to say very clearly: the unity of the 27 associate States in this matter, the unity of the institutions, due to the fact that what can change is strength, unity and effectiveness.

On April 2, U.S. president Donald Trump imposed retaliatory duties (also called mutual) on US trading partners. They amounted to 10% for all imports and 25% for abroad cars. However, for any 10 percent countries, the rate has been increased; for the European Union, which is the 4th after Canada, Mexico and China, America's trading partner, to 20%. However, respective days later, the increased duties were suspended for 90 days (which ends on 8 July; a 10-percent rate is inactive in force), and individual countries began bilateral negotiations with the States.

Britain rapidly came to an agreement with the “big brother” and signed the agreement a period after the suspension of duties. A week later, an agreement was announced with China, although the 2 parties gave each another another 90 days to establish details, reducing the common work rates by 115 pp. to 10% respectively (Chinese duties on American products) and 30% (American duties on Chinese products). Last week, the Financial Times reported that the European Union and the US exchanged negotiating papers for the first time during the talks, identifying the areas of talks, ranging from tariffs to digital trade and investment opportunities, which was assessed as progress.

We have chosen temporary negotiations to present a very hard position, we request that these duties introduced on, for example, aluminum, steel, the automotive manufacture be withdrawn. They besides hit European companies, jobs, businesses, co-operators, besides in Polish workers who work in the automotive manufacture – explains Michał Szczerba. – The European Union is simply a global player. Our main partner is the United States, almost 30% of the sales market, the services marketplace is simply a gigantic partnership and a commercial, and investment. Of course, we have relations with all parts of the world, the most crucial thing for us is that European companies can operate everywhere in an unfettered way, make their businesses and we would like reciprocity here.

The European Commission is conducting a public consultation on a list of goods imported from the United States which, in the absence of an agreement with Washington, are to be imposed by EU retaliatory duties. In April, Brussels estimated that, in consequence to the US steel and aluminium tariffs, it would include "remedies" imported from the United States worth almost €21 billion. They have been suspended for 90 days. In turn, work on extending the list of "remedies", i.e. common duties in consequence to US tariffs, is ongoing. The full value of U.S. goods that could be covered by these measures is €95 billion ($107.4 billion) and covers a wide scope of industrial and agricultural products.

Donald Trump would like to put everyone against the wall, force them to do certain things, and the effect is that he has to change his decisions. At this point we are in a transitional period and I have the impression that the European Union's response, which we will present, will be very hard, but will force us to reflect and revise the pastposts – points out the Europarliamentarian. – Customs dialog is being conducted, but it must yet end, decisions must be made that reflect the interests of Europeans. We are besides expecting Trump in Europe due to the NATO summit in The Hague in June. This will be an chance to talk about security, but it is most likely besides about the economy and is expected, as I understand, to besides visit Brussels. Donald Trump likes bilateral relations, but in the case of customs, in the case of trade he must talk to the European institutions.
