President Karol Nawrocki met with the Lithuanian president Gitanas Nauseda on the Polish-Lithuanian border during the beginning ceremony of the key section of the Via Baltica motorway. This is the only combination of this class connecting the Baltic countries to Poland and the remainder of Europe.

The president stressed that the connecting Poland and Lithuania viaduct is simply a physical and symbolic combination of 2 close nations with a common past and values. At the same time, it combines the 3 Baltic States with the remainder of Europe.

More than a transport route

"The road we are officially beginning present is much more than a transport route; it is simply a link that strengthens our relations and brings together our societies and besides contributes to the resilience of the region" - said Nawrocki. The president noted that the road "reflects the excellent state of Polish-Lithuanian relations".

Nawrocki pointed out the large economical importance of the fresh way as a "key for the full transport corridor region". The way will increase investment and make fresh jobs in the region.

Key to security

However, the president stressed that "the importance of Via Baltica's way for the safety and defence of the full region cannot be overestimated. "This way has 2 destiny. It serves both economical improvement and strengthening the defence capacity of the region" - noted the president of Poland.

During the ceremony, Nawrocki recalled fresh steps to bring the Baltic countries closer to Europe. He exchanged the synchronisation of their energy networks with the European network and the disconnection from the Russian network, as well as the acquisition by the Lithuanians of the floating LNG terminal "Independence".

Connection to the remainder of Europe

Via Baltica is an global way serving as the most crucial artery connecting Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania to Poland. Its section in Poland is primarily the S61 expressway built over the last years, which leads from Ostrów Mazowiecki through Łomża, Elk and Suwałki to the border with Lithuania in Budzisk.

On Monday, both presidents participated in the beginning of the last episode on the Lithuanian side, connecting the border with Poland and Mariampol. The S61 expressway connects to the S8 way in Ostrów Mazowiecki.
