On September 1, we celebrate the 86th anniversary of the outbreak of planet War II. president Karol Nawrocki appeared on Westerplatte on Monday. "Today there must be another signal from Westerplatte, another truth," he said, adding that "there are large challenges ahead."
Nawrocki demands reparation from Germany
– large challenges in the face of the reborn neo-imperialism of the post-Soviet Russian Federation. We have the task of building the European Union, the North Atlantic Alliance. We carry out these tasks together with our trading partner and our neighbour, with Germany," he said.
– In order to be able to build a truth-based partnership, we request to settle the issue of reparations from Germany, which I request as the president of Poland," said Nawrocki.
"Reparations will not be an alternate to historical amnesia, but Poland as a front-end state, as the most crucial state of the east flank of NATO, needs both justice and truth, and a clear relation with Germany, but besides needs a reparation from the German state," Nawrocki said.
He besides called for government support on this matter. "I believe that the Prime Minister and the Polish Government will strengthen the President's voice on the global phase and we will build our real safe future together with our western neighbours," he said.
What does the issue of reparation from Germany look like under the law?
In 1953, the then Polish communist authorities waived all claims for war reparations under force from the russian Union, who wanted to free East Germany, besides the russian satellite, from all obligations. PiS now claims that the agreement is invalid due to the fact that communist Poland was incapable to negociate fair compensation.
To this argument, experts of global law answer that yet all claims have expired by 12 September 1990 at the latest. That's the day the Treaty 2+4 was signed in Moscow. It is colloquially called this due to the fact that the Moscow negotiations were attended by Germany divided into Germany and the GDR, and 4 Allied powers – the USA, the USSR, the United Kingdom and France.
On peculiar terms, the treaty was besides partially negotiated by Poland. The free and democratic III of Poland confirmed the decision from the 1950s. 16 years ago, Anna Fotyga, then head of the Ministry of abroad Affairs, confirmed this in consequence to the parliamentary interpretation.
