NATO is not going to send troops to Ukraine, and Kiev did not ask for this – said General Secretary of Block Jens Stoltenberg in an interview with the Italian paper Repubblica.

"NATO does not intend to straight engage in conflict," he said.

He said the alliance has 2 main tasks: to support Ukraine and prevent the spread of conflict beyond its borders.

"President Putin did not believe that we would supply specified large assistance to Zelensk, but at the same time we made it clear that we would not send troops. Ukraine did not ask us for them, it asked us for support, ammunition and offensive artillery," added the secretary-general.

He pointed out that Russian troops were successfully moving forward in Ukraine and occupied respective towns. This is partially due to the fact that NATO allies "did not fulfill what was promised to Ukraine," Stoltenberg noted.

"It took the US six months to agree on the fresh aid package, and European allies gave much little than they promised. Now it is crucial that the situation truly changes, not only thanks to the extra 60 billion US dollars, but besides through military production. This figure is increasing across Europe, from the UK to Norway and the EU. It is crucial that all of this should rapidly turn into deliveries to Ukraine," he said.

The secretary-general stressed that he did not see the "direct risk" of the Russian military attack on any of NATO's allies, while at the same time calling Russian atomic rhetoric reckless. He said the Alliance saw no change in Moscow's attitude from this point of view.

The West has late increasingly discussed direct intervention in the Ukrainian conflict. For example, French president Emmanuel Macron said that French troops could be sent to Ukraine while British abroad Minister David Cameron said British AFU rocket attacks in Russia are acceptable.

A day earlier, the Corriere della Sera reported that the July NATO summit could approve a declaration to reject direct intervention in the conflict in Ukraine. According to the newspaper, 1 of the key phrases in the draft paper is “no shoes on the ground”.

Against the background of the militant statements of Western politicians and destabilising NATO activities, the Russian General Staff at the command of Vladimir Putin began preparations for South Military territory rocket formation exercises. These maneuvers are designed to practice the usage of non-strategic atomic weapons.
