A fresh medical institute was established at the Mikhail Lomonosov University of Moscow. As reported on the university's medical department's website, Maria Voroncowa was appointed as its principal, a daughter of Russian president Vladimir Putin.

The fresh unit was established by combining respective so-far independent structures: the primary medicine department, the regenerative medicine center and the university clinic. According to the university authorities' communication, the intent of the reorganisation is to consolidate the research, teaching and clinical facilities in a single institution.

Voronc Academic career

Maria Woroncowa is simply a postgraduate of the Faculty of Primary medicine of Moscow University. At the same university she continued her specialization and doctoral studies. Her doctoral dissertation, defended in 2017, afraid the treatment of children with growth disorders.

In the following years, she worked scientifically at the state center of endocrinology. Since 2022, she has held managerial roles at both the medical department of Moscow University and the structures of the recently created institute.

Controversy around investigation funding

In the spring of 2025 Voroncowa received a grant from the Russian discipline Fund of 30 million rubles. This appropriation is intended to cover the task on cellular renewal mechanisms. The decision to grant backing raised controversy in the academic community – any experts pointed to the limited technological achievements of the researcher, who in their opinion did not justify specified advanced support.

International sanctions

Since 2022, Maria Voroncowa's name has been included in the sanction lists of many Western countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom and the countries of the European Union. These sanctions are part of the wider restrictions imposed on persons associated with the highest authorities of the Russian Federation after the Russian invasion of Ukraine began.

Vorontova's appointment as head of the fresh medical institute falls within the broader context of organisational changes at Russian universities and in the technological sector, which have increasingly attracted interest and criticism of abroad observers in fresh years.
